Scallywags in San Diego Should Celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day

September 15, 2016

Ahoy! Your self storage experts at Go Storage Units love to have fun. This month, we're sharing ways to celebrate a relatively new and unusual holiday. September 19th is International Talk Like a Pirate Day. If you live in San Diego, CA, consider yourself lucky; your state is one of only two that officially recognize the silly yet irresistibly fun holiday.

A Brief History of an Odd Holiday

International Talk Like a Pirate Day (ITLAPD) was created in 1995 by friends John Baur and Mark Summers. The inspiration came after one of the Albany, OR, men reacted to the pain of a minor sports injury with an exclamation of a pirate-like "Aaarrr!" The two decided that there should be a day on which everyone in the world exchanged their own dialects for pirate talk. Summers chose his ex-wife's birthday, which was easy for him to remember. The idea first gained exposure after Baur and Summers sent a letter to humor columnist Dave Barry in 2002; this resulted in growing media coverage, and the idea exploded once it reached the internet. You can now choose "Pirate" as a language option on Google Search and Facebook.

How to Join in the Fun

The most obvious way to celebrate the holiday is to learn to talk like a pirate. If you're short on time, use the convenient Post Like a Pirate online translator. Here are a few more creative ideas.

  • Plan a "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie marathon. Invite friends and serve rum.
  • Visit the San Diego Natural History Museum to see its current pirate exhibit. It's both fun and educational.
  • Dress like a pirate. You can find plenty of inspiration online, including a great pirate-themed WikiHow page that offers tips for new pirates learning the ropes.
  • Get free food. Some Krispy Kreme locations give a free glazed doughnut to guests who talk like a pirate. If you're also dressed for the part, you'll get a dozen. Participating Long John Silver's outlets will give you a free fish or chicken tender for pirate talk and a two-piece fish or chicken basket for showing up in full pirate garb. Check your local stores for rules and details.
