City Spotlight: Del City, OK

December 29, 2016

All major cities have a great supporting cast. After all, it's the towns that surround places like Oklahoma City that help to create a sprawling metropolis. Take Del City, OK as an example – a small yet expanding city with a rich history that helped to make Oklahoma City what it is today. If you're thinking about moving to Oklahoma, put Del City at the top of your list.

Del City's Rich History

What began as 160 acres in 1946 is now one of the major cities in the OKC metropolitan area. Developer George Epperly had an idea to purchase the land and build 50 houses throughout the acreage. The families in the area adopted a charter by 1959 and formed a small, council manager-type of town government. This action gave rise to Del City, which was named after Epperly's daughter, Delaphine.

The city grew exponentially by 1963, when it annexed Carter Park and Midway Village. A year later, the city grew to its limit, having expanded 20 more acres along the Tinker Air Force Base boundary. Del City is also responsible for Lake Thunderbird as it united with Midwest City and Norman for the Little River Reservoir Project in 1964.

Del City, OK Has Much to Offer

Del City has a great economy thanks to its relationship with Tinker AFB; it's the biggest single-site employer in the state. Residents live and work in the area, taking advantage of the jobs at Tinker and the numerous businesses in both Del City and the nearby capital. In fact, Del City sits only 2 miles from Oklahoma City, giving residents access to even more businesses and other options such as restaurants, night clubs and the arts.

The cost of living in Del City is 22 percent less than the national average. It also has positive job growth, making it a good place in which to relocate and start a career. However, it's not all about work in Del City. You can enjoy annual parades and festivals, car shows and even music events at the Country-Western Music & Hall of Fame.

You'll also find tons of things to do outdoors. You can fish or have a picnic at Eagle Lake, shoot for under par at Trosper Golf Course or spend a day at one of the many neighborhood parks.
